e-Government Directorate in the Office of the President in Kenya undertook to set-up infrastructure for delivery of e-Governance (Service delivery via ICT). Having received a loan from the Chinese Government for this purpose, Huawei – the implementing party from China contracted Symphony to Supply the infrastructure to Directorate of e-Government. This involved supply of over 6,000 computers, 100 servers and assorted peripherals to be delivered to all ministries countrywide.

The Client – National Bank of Rwanda

The National Bank of Rwanda is the Central Bank of the Republic of Rwanda. It was established by the law of 24th April 1964 and came into force from 19th May 1964. As per the law n° 55/2007 of 30/11/2007, the National Bank of Rwanda is a Public institution with legal personality and independence in operations, administration and financial areas.

Its mission is to ensure price stability and a sound financial system and it’s vision to become a world-Class Central Bank.


National Bank of Rwanda wanted to implement some new module for the Data center Rwamagana BNR Branch


  1. Supply, install and maintain hardware and software necessary to implement the new Modular Data Centre at the Disaster Site (Rwamagana Branch).
  2. Provide detailed documentation on configuration and parameterization of equipment provided.
  3. The support and transfer of skills to BNR Technicians and Engineers before, during and after the work of implementation.
  4. The provision of technical documentation for hardware and software provided.

The Client – City of Kigali

City of Kigali is the Capital City of Rwanda; it has a surface area of 730 km2. It is composed of three Districts, namely: Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge, 35 Sectors, 161 Cells and 1183 Villages.

City of Kigali authority has embarked on good governance promotion whereby community will be involved and this will be accompanied by giving values on good service delivered and promoting entire welfare of the citizens in general.

This service charter is embedded by important principles such as working in transparency, quality, and quick services and also giving room for opinions from the beneficiaries. This client charter will be abided by all service sectors concerned such as City of Kigali and its Districts.


City of Kigali was looking to design its server room, devoted to the continuous operation of computer servers.


Symphony’s solution was based on designing a room used to store, power and operate computer servers and their associated components, this room which typical houses several physical servers lined up together in different form factors, such as rack mounted, or in tower or blade enclosures.

This server was designed with additional/backup power and cooling supply and protective systems.


The final result with this project, city of kigali now have:

  • Managed Power Distribution
  • Managed Power Distribution
  • System-wide backups and administration
  • Central file repository and sharing documents etc

The Client- Rwanda Development Board (RDB)

The Rwanda Development Board was set up by bringing together all the government agencies responsible for the entire investor experience under one roof. This includes key agencies responsible for business registration, investment promotion, environmental clearances, privatization and specialist agencies which support the priority sectors of ICT and tourism as well as SMEs and human capacity development in the private sector.

The Rwanda Development Board is evidence that Rwanda is open for business. It is truly a one stop shop for all investors.

One of the main role for RDB is ICT in Rwanda: Information and Communication Technology is a central engine to driving Rwanda’s transformation to a knowledge based economy, a fact Rwanda has acknowledged by allocating a budget to ICT - as a percentage of its GDP - that is at par with OECD countries.

Rwanda continues to be one of the fastest growing African countries in ICT and there are several avenues for growth for the ICT sector – from e-commerce and e-services, mobile technologies, applications development and automation to becoming a regional center for the training of top quality ICT professionals and research. A robust ICT industry can create wealth, jobs and entrepreneurs.


With increasing Strong & visionary leadership and Young and dynamic workforce in offering services to its citizens, RDB needed a system that would improve the good and rapid services.


Symphony’s solution was based on network and LAN cabling to help in offering rapid and good services and ensure excellent communication between offices and sectors up to district offices. The project was to Supply and Installation of LAN Equipment for 250 Sector Offices in countrywide.

IBM POWER processor makes it possible for multi-applications to run faster with fewer processors, resulting in lower per core software licensing costs. IBM maintains leadership in the UNIX market and has made significant investments in securing a strong roadmap. Project Duration

From the date the contract was signed with BRITAM until final completion was achieved, the project took approximately five months. The project was completed within budget.


The final result is an IT infrastructure environment that allows Britam to be independent in the management and growth of their business, through the use of IBM enterprise servers & storages. It reflects management commitment for growth & availability thus ensuring the organization to meet the needs of customer & introduce new services & enhance customer experience.

Safaricom pioneered commercial mobile money transfer globally through M-PESA, the most successful service of its kind anywhere in the world.  Launched in March 2007, M-PESA now has over 23 million customers and over 100,000 M-PESA Agent outlets countrywide.


With increasing customer base, safaricom was always looking forward for systems which have could provide the five 9’s availability & levels of scalability, thus ensuring their growth in the market against competitors. They had already outgrown with the existing system which was serving their CRM, Mediation & ERP systems. The management therefore needed a system that would improve reliability, availability & increase C-SAT levels among customer for the wide range of services provided.


Symphony’s solution was based on IBM P-795 boxes & Storage to cater the purpose of consolidation & scalability for the required applications. Systems are highly scalable & ensure the highest availability levels. The latest features ensured higher utilization levels thus improving system efficiency & performance. Issues related to timely reports & performance have drastically gone down as system has sufficient bandwidth to perform month-end /quarter & yearly operations. The integration skills for installing, enabling & fine tuning of systems with additional features was the key area where symphony differentiated from its competitors. The additional features provides flexibility to the system to make sure to cater resources at the time of crunch.

From the date the contract was signed with the SAFARICOM until final completion was achieved it took approximately two and a half months. The project was completed within budget.


The final result is an IT environment comprising of systems capable of handling large DB’s & performance intensive applications & can scale-up as per the increase in workload thus enabling safaricom to deliver best in class services as compared to its competitor. Several applications including CRM, Mediation & Billing are now providing better response time thus making sure that end of month time is reduced from a time span of weeks to a few days,  leading to increase in revenue for the Safaricom  . It reflects the management commitment to stay in pace with the emerging technology & thus serving its customer with the best of industry standards.
